CrossFit for everyone: How the coach adapts workouts for anyone.

If you think CrossFit is only for athletes lifting insane weights or performing acrobatic moves, YOU ARE WRONG!

Just take a walk through the boxes in Copacabana, Leme, Ipanema, Leblon, or Botafogo, and you will see a very different reality: teenagers, everyday people (non-athletes), and seniors training side by side.

And don’t tell me you’ve never been startled by a crowd running down the street and thought: “Look at all those fit people doing an ‘arrastão’ (group mugging)!” In reality, CrossFit is a “war” against a sedentary lifestyle.

As Coach Sam Becks from Fábrica BTT says: “The prejudice against the sport comes from years ago, but today the focus is simple: being alive and having a purpose when you wake up.”

CrossFit is for everyone! The community repeats this mantra everywhere.

The Secret is “Adaptation” (Scaling)

The rule is clear: the workout molds to the student, not the other way around. According to Sam Becks at Fábrica BTT, before anything else, we assess your history, injuries, and current reality so the coach can adapt the movements on the spot.

  • Box Jumps: If a student has knee restrictions or any other reason, they don’t jump; they perform a step-up or use a lower plate to maintain the stimulus.

  • Weightlifting: If a movement is complex, a beginner starts with a PVC pipe to master the technique before touching any actual weight.

  • Effort Scale: The secret to not getting scared is control. Often, the coach guides you through an effort scale: “Today, don’t exceed 20%, 30%, or 50% of your maximum effort.”

The goal of this scale is to take care of you. The coach ensures you leave the workout feeling good, so you can go grab an ice cream at Alex, a beer at Bodega, and still want to come back the next day, building consistency before seeking intensity.

If you can’t run, you walk. (In the street! Just to be clear).

Benefits for the “Carioca Lifestyle”

Training CrossFit in the South Zone goes far beyond aesthetics. Functional exercises prepare the body for the real challenges of daily life in Rio:

  • Mobility: Essential for walking on the boardwalk or climbing the neighborhood hills.
  • Autonomy: As Coach Sam defines it, being functional means “letting your body work for you.” The real goal is that at 60, you can put food in your mouth without shaking or dropping anything because you maintained your precision and motor coordination.
  • Functional Strength: Helps with posture for those who work sitting for hours, or to endure the massive lines at the Mundial supermarket and still carry the groceries home.
  • Community: In the South Zone, where many live alone, the box becomes family. “90% of my students have no one else in the city besides their CrossFit friends,” reveals Sam Becks. These are friendships forged in sweat!

Safety First

Contrary to popular belief, the focus is on mechanics and consistency, and only then comes intensity. Coaches are trained in first aid and follow strict box etiquette—such as proper spacing between students—to prevent any accidents.

At Fábrica BTT, for example, the protocol is clear: even in group classes, the coach has a technical obligation to observe each student individually, correcting movements in real-time to ensure no one trains with incorrect technique. This watchful eye is what prevents injuries and ensures safety.

Quick Guide: What to look for before choosing a box

  • Coach’s Attention: They should be moving around the box at all times, correcting and helping.
  • Foundations Classes: Serious boxes teach the basics before throwing you into the “crossfire.”
  • Community Vibe: Avoid places with bullying. Look for boxes where students help each other and move at a unified pace.

Your CrossFit box in Copacabana, Leme, Ipanema, Leblon, Botafogo, or anywhere in Rio should not be about who is the fastest or the strongest, but about who moves the best.

“Don’t let prejudice stop you from having better health. Allow yourself to test it, feel the energy of our community, and discover that CrossFit is not about what you can’t do, but about what you are going to learn to conquer.” — Sam Becks, Fábrica BTT
